When I started raising backyard chickens my feed bill kept getting higher and higher. I would see an occasional mouse but didn't think there were that many until one day I happened to move the galvanized feed tub. Rats had dug a hole out underneath so they could hide when they heard someone coming. About two dozen rats ran over my feet once I lifted the feeder. They say if you see one rat you have a hundred.
There were some wonderful feeders on the market like the Grandpa feeder but they were way out of my price range so I started making prototypes and getting feedback from the nice readers on the BackYardChickens.com forum. The feeder evolved from a plywood feeder into a galvanized sheet metal feeder over a period of about a year and a half.
And my rat population? Within days they were starving and venturing out into the yard in the daylight searching for food. My two dogs killed most of them and the rest moved away.
