A rat proof chicken feeder prevents rats from colonizing your yard and chicken coop and eliminates one major concern for your neighbors. Made out of galvanized sheet metal for durability with a 3/4" wide steel treadle that the chickens step on to operate the feeder door. The door is spring loaded as well as having a counterweight to prevent rats, mice, birds, and other wild animals from getting to the feed.
The design sets the treadle step so far back that a squirrel or very large rat can't hold the treadle down and eat at the same time. There is an inner lip at the front of the feeder to prevent birds from raking feed out onto the ground. The feeder was designed and tested using feedback from the BackYardChickens website in 2011 and evolved from a plywood feeder to a almost 100% all steel feeder. Only the treadle step and mounting block are wood.
The small size rat proof chicken feeder holds 12 pounds of feed and is approximately 21" tall x 11" x 8" plus the treadle itself which protrudes another 9 inches.
Chickens will learn to use the feeder in around two days, one day in some cases. The small size feeder will feed 12 birds for 4 days or 4 birds for 12 days. We recommend one feeder for every 12 birds.
The feeder is assembled and tested, then the treadle is removed to save money on shipping.
